Caspar David Friedrich, Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer (1818)
Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) is one of Europe’s finest and best-known Romantic painters. He is most renowned for his landscapes, which tend to be allegorical and to feature contemplative figures – as in this painting of a ‘wanderer above a sea of fog’. You can see this painting on display in the Kunsthalle Hamburg.
