Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was an Austrian artist and founding member of the Vienna Secession movement. This group of young artists sought freedom from established artistic traditions, and their motto thus read ‘Der Zeit ihre Kunst. Der Kunst ihre Freiheit’ (‘To every age its art. To art its freedom’). This image shows one of the Secession’s posters from 1898 –left blank for the artists to add details of the latest exhibition.
