MFL Professional Development Meetings in Oxfordshire

MFL teachers in and around Oxford and Abingdon are invited to attend either one of two professional development meetings which are being organised in June. The objective of the meeting is to discuss eight principles which were developed from research into effective teaching and learning of languages, and shared with MFL teachers in the past year through workshops and a website (www.pdcinmfl.com). The principles focus on a skills based approach to language learning, and have been very popular - just over 100 teachers throughout England have used the principles in their teaching, and noticed a positive impact on their students and their professional development.

In the long term the idea is to set up a cluster of teachers in the area who will meet about three times each year, after school, to plan how the principles can be used in language teaching, share experiences of using them, and most importantly to build a support network for professional development. The cluster will be driven by the teachers who are part of it, with initial support from staff at the Universities of Oxford and Reading who worked on the project.

Professional Development Tour for British Teachers of History

The German Embassy London together with the Federal Foreign Office organises an annual professional development tour for British teachers of history to Berlin. The purpose of the trip is to give participants a wide-ranging impression of present-day Germany, and Berlin in particular, as a background for teaching German history. The trip generally includes highlights of contemporary Berlin, visits to schools, talks with history teachers and teachers’ associations, a visit to the Federal Foreign Ministry, the Jewish Museum, the German Historical Museum, a tour of the Reichstag, etc. The tours are conducted in English. All costs relating to the trip (inc. flight and accommodation) are covered by the German Federal Foreign Office.
